Last weekend Kris and I took photos for LE in Indian at the Brown Bear and along the Seward highway. I took 3 rolls are was happy with about 90% of the photos, so a lot to post I guess. Brought the Diana+ out, she hasnt gotten a lot of action since the Rollei came along, but I thought it'd be fitting for the Brown Bear and for LE's style. I hope she likes them! Diana+ photos are already on flickr, more rollei to come.

Seattle was sweet. 75 and sunny. Red Sox lost which was the only bummer.
Margot and the Nuclear So & So's were so fun. Best band I've seen live in years. The dude was playing a Suitcase! a Suitcase! as a drum. Check out this video of them.

i heart brian adams hard for taking this photo of my bike and i the other weekend. this was about an hour before she betrayed me by tipping over and dumping me into the street. also prior to basket installation. when i talked to some guys at the bike shop they assured me the bike wasnt too big for me, i dont even have the seat all the way down. they told me i just needed to learn to embrace and appreciate the older design, and in a word, be tough. heart you, bike.

Here's what I've been up to. Beach, chalk, bike, work. No big surprises. Headed to Seattle next weekend though to go to a Red Sox game and get outta AK for a few days. Couldn't come sooner.

Designers come up with some pretty crazy ideas. I'm constantly wondering what I want to do when I move on from advertising, and I'm wondering how this guy {Peter Buchanan-Smith} turned the somewhat mundane life as a designer into a company that makes axes. Gotta hand it to him, they're one of a kind (and made in maine!).

On Saturday i went to the boys and girls club to shoot Oscar. Oscar helps the kids build bikes, and teaches them bike maintenance. it was hectic and terrifying at first, and the kids kept sticking their fingers in my cameras. but it the end, it was great, and there are many many more photos to come. favorite quote of the day: Oscar, "awww Leah could be a mother." This comment came as a surprise to both of us.
This was my second time at this particular boys and girls club, both for photo reasons, but this one was far more fun, even if i was mainly creepy around in the background. it was a beautiful day, and the first time i've gotten to wear flip flops this spring. (can it technically be "spring" if there's snow on the ground?)
anyway, great experience, first time i've taken a stab at shooting something in a more journalistic kind of way. i can see why people love autofocus so much now, but in all actuality i had a harder time hitting the shutter before a bike rolled off or the kids walked away then keeping things in focus the whole time.

I love this camera. i love love love it. And I love that the sun is back up here in the arctic north, so we can go back to our little condos in the mountains after a day of skiing and sit down, and have this beautiful beautiful light warm on our faces.
this would have been stronger in color, thanks to brenda's cabin being so darn cute with it's little wood table and turquoise cabinets. And the sun being that golden orange it gets before setting, but I only had b/w film with me. Next time.

I picked up 3 rolls today, 84 frames and 39 ended up in the good pile. That's my best batting average yet. And if it wasnt for brian's sticky shutter on the leica i would have been money. Or maybe if i didnt live in a climate where one must worry about such things.
Got out last weekend with brendan and ryan to the ice caves at the glacier on placer river. beautiful sunny, somehwhat warm day.
schooled some suckers on the pool table with bobby.
brought out the two planks to take it easy on the knee and did some sweet hockey stops with kswanson. not a bad week i'd say.
painted a mannequin green for the website, and off to gwood for more skiing and to see the 11:20s at maxines. (album is so so so close to being done.)
there's a lot going on in anchorage lately, fur rondy, and ididerod, shoots with Ba, family dinners with new members, i'd hate to say it but i may have underestimated this town, and i'm nothing but glad that i stuck around for year 2. but that's it.

today marks the completion of one of the hardest deadlines i've had to meet in the last year and a half at this job. sans creative director, sans real direction at all, i was faced with a massive website with completely non traditional navigation and aimed at 15-20 year old alaskan native youth about sexual health. Once the the navigation and concept were nailed down (4 days) I had 5 days to complete the site. i've been working longggg days/night all week, and have gotten to know the cleaning people here all too well. i've also found if you need a little inspiratation late night at the office, download a banging 90s hip hop mix. wont disapoint. back when diddy was puff daddy. images shown are place holders, ba photo and fish photo.
in the midst of the we're doing photoshoots for content and i'm looking forward to getting out to the alaska native heritage center today.
my film is sitting idle in it's cameras, sad and somewhat neglected, but i managed to get a few shots off yesterday with the leica out at westchester lagoon when i allowed myself a 10 minute break. so monday. off to kellers and the gym. tomorrow. getting outside with my shred stick. and today.... please no snafoos. please please. and then i need to unwind and eat something because i'm pretty sure i've lost 5 lbs this week.

this week the things i miss are my dog, and being able to land on the ground. i got to play with two really cool dogs this week, ferdinand and dozer. they were both so small and cute and cuddly. awwww. finally wasn't so smal and cute and cuddly, more kind of a spaz that you had to get really worn out in order to be cuddly. hopefully the oscar/ferdinand photos come out....silly rollei. silly me.
i've been snowboarding what feels like a lot lately and it's been super awesome for the first hour or so, then struggling to ignore the pain the second hour. followed by a few hours of stiffening pain and swelling. all the little mini natural airs at aly are the equivalent of dropping 20ft cliffs in stead of two feet, because my leg just cant take the compression. and i fould some weird little lumps in there yesterday that i hope have nothing to do with anything...ew.... even just bouldering, dropping down from the top of the wall... eventually it will come back. eventually. and eventually i will get a dog of my own and stop being creepy and preying on others... eventually.

I picked this photo today since kswanson in starring all dejectedly at his feet. which is what i'd be doing today if i weren't starring at this silly screen all day. he was probably just thinking gee what's taking her so long to focus.
aside from that moment of self-pity, i got film back from the canon canonet QL17 GIII. Kind of a mouth full for such a small simple camera, but i'm loving her in black and white, and i have two more rolls to drop off today. mostly people sitting in restaurants, or people eating things. I'm pretty sure it's time for me to pick a focus unrelated to convenience.
The Zoe Strauss lecture was cool. She's a super rad person, and I enjoyed her first friday portrait session. Funnnny.

thanks to ba, marian and colin for letting me tag along on the shoot the other weekend. sorry i wasn't a very good light stand, i was distracted by taking photos as well. whoops. here's what came of it.
it's been so great to be surrounded by others with cameras and i'm completely obsessed. my first roll from the canon was sweet. though i have a feeling i may need to hang out with more people, so i dont have 1,000 photos of kris and brian. :(
for those interested, no, the volcano has not erupted. but i wish it would. people + ash + snow = great photos. flipping great. tonight i'm going to see Zoe Strauss speak at the museum. should be really cool. too bad patrick's car battery couldn't take the fairbanks cold to come down for it. would have been neat.

here's a comparison for funsies. brian took both pictures, top - his hasselblad with portra 400 NC film, bottom, my rolleiflex with portra 400 VC film.... interesting. i think my camera wins, he thinks he does. guess that's why we use different film.

I'd like you to notice two things Not going on in this photo: It's not snowing, and there isn't a volcano threatening to erupt.
Couldn't post an Anchorage photo with that description. I miss San Diego.
Maybe all this volcanic activity has something to do with the Earthquake that shook me awake Saturday morning on my birthday. That was actaully kind of cool though, and no one was hurt, it just felt like getting a little sloshed in a fishbowl. But this volcano business... please? Where are we? Buy extra air filters for your cars, cover electronics, take out your contacts, wear a mask, because volcanic ash is essentially small bits of glass.
My favorite part so far has been all the company wide emails instructing us what to do.
What I'D like to do is go back to San Diego - go on this walk again, and stick a person in this shot. Any volunteers?

i had this slow sensation waking up this morning and realized i have incredible friends in anchorage. thank you especially to brian + ro for hosting a fun times party saturday night. it was so fun to finally meet marian after hearing about her. and kris with his homemade chocolate shot glasses that were crazy cool, even though it made my fingers sticky. and all the help with the cupcakes that were a funny hit. and the power singing/dancing. who would have thought total eclipse of the heart would still be fun on round 4. and even being completely thrown down in the kitchen, and picked up and dropped a few more times then my knee would have liked. brendan, you were missed.

Brenda's thoughts on the end of the world and Alaskan survival:
Due to the fact that it has been in the -20's lately, and I'm in the middle of reading Stephenie Meyer's book "The Host", thoughts of the end of the world have been frequenting my mind lately. Street signs covered in hoarfrost, my car not starting, and iced over buildings have made me think about what it would be like if the end of the world came, like tomorrow... and I was stuck in this hell hole of a freezing state. And I've decided contrary to popular belief (leah's)... we would actually be far better off up here in the north. Think about it.... We're far less populated than down in "the states"... so there would be more shiz to go around. Less fighting till the death over leftover twinkies at walmart. Our stores up here, are already fully loaded with winter survival shit. Boots, Parkas, GUNS... and we're already slightly acclimated to what a nuclear winter would be like. so!
I think it would be just fine. We could band together with the natives and hunt moose. Wrap ourselves in sealskin blankets.
and just think about how many fucking trees are around us. Everyone in the lower 48 would be good and dead before we could get through all the trees up here.
Furthermore, I know how to make a survival snow mound.

Jen told me he slept outside my california door last night, and this morning in anchorage when i woke up i reached down to pet him and just found the floor. Sad. I think it's about dog time for me.
Dropped off four rolls today... so that should be pretty exciting in a couple days. hopefully?
It's really cold back here in Alaska, but for some reason i was chipper all the same when i woke up this morning, bounced around my car scraping it in the -10 weather, and it was kinda nice..... ask me how i feel about it in a week though. ha.

I was up at Alyeska this weekend. We did a photo shoot for Callan, the US Snowboard team member from Girdwood. Then I saw The 11:20s at the Sitz. Good times. Kind of sad to be there and not be able to snowobard, but it was nice to do the whole mountain town thing again. Especially funny to hear Chad singing brown eyed girl after the show because some hottie asked him to play it. Ha! I'm leaving on Friday for San Diego for two weeks. Thank god. The promise of some eventual sunshine has been keeping me going the past couple weeks.

Got first roll of brownie prints back. Not that stoked really, but kinda fun nonetheless. Such a simple little box camera. Still interested in finding a bulb/batteries for the flash. More stoked on the Viv though than the brownie.

In the middle of a fantaaaastic 4 day shoot right now, stills and video for a grrrreat cause and it's so incredibly nice to be excited for a project. We're working with a huge variety of people and it's the first time I've actually felt comfortable just hanging out painting/playing cribage with the peeps Brian's photographing. Hooray for not dreading a Monday.

Kinda a cool website out there for print enthusiasts, MOO, they enable users to make business cards, stickers, mini cards, notecard, postcard, all sorts of nice little things you could personalize. key thing is, it's easy, and fast as hell. can do double sided images though, can't do much for text, but so fast. ordering some mini cards now.

Sat in on a Strategist call with Iconoculture about giving and today's economy. Holy my goodness, those folks at iconoculture think our world is ending, and they have all the charts and graphs to prove it. These are scary times. Should I be thinking about relocating under these circumstances? All he kept saying was, "and we haven't seen numbers like this since the great depression" and "we haven't seen these kind of drop offs... ever." and "We can't foresee the end." So I squinched up my nose, snuggled into the wall and started doodling a little furry toed land that me and my yeti friends could co-habit with our yeti dogs and held in my giggles.

Brenda and I were driving today and we saw a funny looking man who looked like one of the Guess Who characters. Which made me stop and think... Guess Who? is pretty much racist. The game instills negativity towards any one that looks different than a non-discript white male. Think back... you draw a card... look at it... DAMN IT I GOT A GIRL! Or your opponent asks, "is your skin white?" "No." (DAMN IT!) and you totally loose because they flip down all but 2 characters or some shit. The photo I found was all white people! And they're all wearing berets, what is this shit?

Hey, Rad. I'd never heard of these dudes but I'm definitely appreciating the trailer and the powder slashes. Last year's movie is available for free download on their site, and this year's will be in November.
Powder slashes are one of the most rewarding feelings, it's like driving stick too fast, a complete excess but a wonderful feeling. Difference is, powder's free for the taking.

feeling pretty good today considering. brenda brought m about 15 chick flicks so that should get me through the weekend. I showered yesterday, TA-DA! Saturday I broke my knee cap into 8 pieces trying to fit one last beautiful day of shred in. Broke it on a stupid BOX being held up by cinderblocks. My knee hit the cinderblock straight on, not danaging any of the tissue or ligaments or whatnot. Ended in a surgery requiring what looks like a hand full of nails and a bunch of wire. I'll have to get all that shit taken out in 6 months-year. Was playing around on the box so i wouldnt just sit around and drink beer all day.
MORAL OF THE STORY: opt out for beer drinking. Or really, just don't test your fucking luck. I've been riding 12 seasons now, and this is my first major injury. It comes with the territory. If you're going to snowboard you have to accept that. I tried to play it safe all year, not really trying things that were new for me besides feild of steep snow. Which I think I'm going to stick to next season. No more concrete. No more cinderblocks. This HURTS.

Been listening to some African French jams on the late. Trying to pick up some french fried phrases to test on my sister before she takes off for Senegal in August. In the book You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers the two main characters go to Senegal, and meet a woman treading water in the pool who describes to them the "4th World." Maybe this is where my sister is headed.

SO it was nice and sunny and in the 40s here for awhile but now we're back in a winter wonderland. I guess it's good for the freeskiing world championships at Alyeska this weekend. I'm hoping i get to see Chris Tatsuno this weekend competing which would be fun. Got me thinking to how long it's been since I've seen friends from college. Besides brendan... and jim. But they don't count because we all live in AK and that's weird. Anyway what i mean is jeanie poop and jen poop. I'm really hoping to get to CO soon for a visit, but i just dont know when i can get that in. I'm really fucking tired today and I'm not making any sense.

There's going to be a photo update soon hopefully! Brendan took some awesome photos of the krunk party and i think there's some funny ones of ian and ramy doing snowboard hurdles.

last week we went to turnagain to do some steep shreds on the snow machines. it was sunny and warm and awesome. brendan did some sweet airs and some equally sweet falls, while jim hit some nice little cliffers. you'll be able to tell from the pictures that this shit was steep and you had to go fast as to not get eaten by the sluff river.

admittedly i was a little terrified at times. most notably when brendan dropped me off at the top of the really steep one and i was just standing there, walking along this massive cornice peaking over the edge to see jim as small as an ant at the bottom. peaking over an edge that you couldn't even tell what was along the way down to get to jim and brendan... and then just dropping down and feeling like holy fuck please let this feel somewhat solid under my feet until i get down there.

this weekend we rode alyeska and pretty much just hiked a fun little quarter pipe. brendan did some nice handplants and had all the 17 year old boys drooling.

No one told me that after i went heli skiing for the first time I'd never want to ride a lift again. who wants a superquad when you can have a super ass fucking helicopter land you on a dime at the top of an otherwise inaccessible mountain. especially when you're riding with stu, long, long time childhood friend and ultimately one of the most fun people i've known, brendan, who really got me into riding a massive amount in college, and austin, who i didn't know well going into this but is incredibly talented with a camera and even more intelligent than i could understand in three days.
It was all just warm temperatures, virgin powder, steep steep runs and nicely spaced trees and cliffs and pillows and drops and all the niceties that make snowboarding what it's meant to be.
So i have lots of fun Polaroids from the trip that i need to scan. Austin got all the money shots though. I just got the I'm kinda bored and we've been in the car for a long time shots. but here they are until i have others or until i scan Polaroids.

oh hey, it's that time of year/month/week again where i spend a night dorking out on my computer after dorking out at work on my computer all day and get sore eyes going through photos and editing and resizing for fun. FUN! wow my idea of fun has changed over the years. So yea, there are some alaska highlights that have stories that are long overdo but probably won't come undone tonight.

i'm missing friends lately, to name a few, damn it, i miss craig back home, miss jean and jenn in colorado, and i miss jweb out in the midwest where are the nicest people are from. miss the sisters of course, down on the beach, what a scatter. miss my dog, but anyone who knows me, knows that.

sipping some barley wine, which is weird, kinda just kind sweetish dark beer. don't know if i really like it but it get my mind rolling, and i kinda need that when i get home from work. geez that stuff can get into you so much more than you intend it to. get all woven into your feelings and moods and can make you unhappy if you don't watch out.

I'm going to be living my preachings this upcoming week though. and damn i'm feeling ready for it. I aways tell people when they're feeling down there's just two things you need to be constantly aware of - like watching the gauges on your car - perspective and balance. and hell i think i'm going to have one great powerful dose of perspective from the helicopter on monday. oh boy. so yea, perspective. it can be cold here, yes. can be dark, sure was. can be boring, did that. can be frustrating as all hell, check off that box. but i think a nice scare every once in awhile forces me into seeing all the yum yums in my life. alright. i'm sick of rambling while waiting for these pics to upload on my shitty ass stolen wireless connection.

december went by, and so has half of january. i didn't post for a long time, let's not harp on it, it was laziness, a bit of depression, and the absolute darkest time of my life, in a literal sense, it's dark here. the sun didn't come up. things happen gradually, but it feels like suddenly they change. december 21st, the shortest day of the year we had 5 hours, 20 minutes of "sunlight" more like dusk. and now a month later we're back up to 6 hours, 51 minutes. In two weeks, 8 hours 14 minutes. We're on the upside. Again, literally. Alright, so all the is time i haven't just been obsessing over sunlight, although admittedly, it has been about 40% of my time. we got 26 inches of fresh snow overnight for christmas, we that was crazy. we had a beautiful sunset saturday afternoon, viewed from the trail at aleyska, looking out over the frozen water of the inlet and past the mountains on the other side. i've been really busy at work, getting a chance to do things i've never done before, and even getting a bit of creative freedom. met all of brendan's friends - they're all crazy - crazy in that way where you laugh and it makes your stomach hurt, and crazy like they have funny facial hair, and they're welcoming.

- and lastly a new friend of mine here recommended listening to "this american life" hosted by ira glass, a chicago public radio show. all the episodes are online, and he's also just put out a new book featuring the new "kings of nonfiction" that has a great looking cover. he's a fantastic story teller, and features other great personalities. Happy thanksgiving, blah blah blah. My whole entire family is together at my mom's house today in Maine and it's actually kind of sad for me and I miss everyone. It's funny the relationships families have. You take all these people, some who choose to be with one another, husbands and wives, and then others who just got put in the same car on life's road, sisters, brothers, cousins. And then they're all bound to eachother from time they get the muck wiped off of them at birth to the time they get covered back in muck at death. And they share all these experiences. But remain individual and spread out all over, and on days like today they come back together... eat grammies three section rolls, do the turkey dance, and remember how they came about living the life they're living. Grammy will say grace, and hopefully they go around the table and say thanks for things, and remember the people who have sat that table in past who can no longer be there. Tonight my grandmother will announce she's going to be a great grandmother, and jen can show everyone the ultrasound of little alien baby ralph. And then little Alien Ralph will be thrown into the car with the rest of us, being the first in a whole new generation of people who gather around tables, scrape plates and take the dessert orders. Ahhhh. Sometimes I really do love this life. But I really hope the name Ralph doesn't stick.
So to honor this family holiday, I'm giving thanks to them and keeping them in mind for my photo choices today.
