Oh California. How I love to love you, and hate to hate you. Been here the last week and a half. Exploring San Diego, talking with some designers, walking on beaches, spending time with family, hanging out with an old friend. It's sensory overload, it really is. What's to complain about though when every morning I can step out barefoot in a t-shirt? and it's -7 back in anchorage... oh boy. The places you will go!

CA feet.
Warm, dry, snow free in san diego for one more week. I could deal with 66. Degree winters more often. My mind keeps wandering on back to AK... But doesn't stay very long. Taking lots of photos, and waiting on a lot of film. I'll have to wait to post that till I return. That is, if I return.

Alyeska
I was up at Alyeska this weekend. We did a photo shoot for Callan, the US Snowboard team member from Girdwood. Then I saw The 11:20s at the Sitz. Good times. Kind of sad to be there and not be able to snowobard, but it was nice to do the whole mountain town thing again. Especially funny to hear Chad singing brown eyed girl after the show because some hottie asked him to play it. Ha! I'm leaving on Friday for San Diego for two weeks. Thank god. The promise of some eventual sunshine has been keeping me going the past couple weeks.

Are scanned at last. And Crappy. But oh well. That's what you get for a $5 plastic box camera. At least the camera looks rad.

kodak brownie hawkeye photos.
Got first roll of brownie prints back. Not that stoked really, but kinda fun nonetheless. Such a simple little box camera. Still interested in finding a bulb/batteries for the flash. More stoked on the Viv though than the brownie.
In the middle of a fantaaaastic 4 day shoot right now, stills and video for a grrrreat cause and it's so incredibly nice to be excited for a project. We're working with a huge variety of people and it's the first time I've actually felt comfortable just hanging out painting/playing cribage with the peeps Brian's photographing. Hooray for not dreading a Monday.

Classy name, eh? You can see the rest of the photos here: PHOTOFUN!
Kinda a cool website out there for print enthusiasts, MOO, they enable users to make business cards, stickers, mini cards, notecard, postcard, all sorts of nice little things you could personalize. key thing is, it's easy, and fast as hell. can do double sided images though, can't do much for text, but so fast. ordering some mini cards now.

done crafting.
Alright, so I'm wrapping up the craft project at work, and we've begun editing it for TV. It looks crazy in motion. I'm pretty excited about it. I have one last thing to make... A moose. Go figure.
crappy quality, great song. Conor Oberst. Sausalito?

Let's make new worlds.
Sat in on a Strategist call with Iconoculture about giving and today's economy. Holy my goodness, those folks at iconoculture think our world is ending, and they have all the charts and graphs to prove it. These are scary times. Should I be thinking about relocating under these circumstances? All he kept saying was, "and we haven't seen numbers like this since the great depression" and "we haven't seen these kind of drop offs... ever." and "We can't foresee the end." So I squinched up my nose, snuggled into the wall and started doodling a little furry toed land that me and my yeti friends could co-habit with our yeti dogs and held in my giggles.

Guess Who?
Brenda and I were driving today and we saw a funny looking man who looked like one of the Guess Who characters. Which made me stop and think... Guess Who? is pretty much racist. The game instills negativity towards any one that looks different than a non-discript white male. Think back... you draw a card... look at it... DAMN IT I GOT A GIRL! Or your opponent asks, "is your skin white?" "No." (DAMN IT!) and you totally loose because they flip down all but 2 characters or some shit. The photo I found was all white people! And they're all wearing berets, what is this shit?

craft-tastic.
Been crafting my little heart out at work. I guess I have a knack at turning my projects into something I make by hand instead of on the computer. I'm sick of computers.
Went snowshredding yesterday, fun, fun times. Kinda scary at times, really painful at others, but overall fun.
Going to see FRITZ HAEG speak tonight.

photos are the most fun.
i like film. computers are neat and all, but i get a little disenchanted with them at the end of the day. think about this way, my camera has no battery. no cords. no on/off button. no lcd screen. it doesn't talk to me. but i love her all the same.
plus cameras are nice. the meanest thing they can do is a light leak. and those are actually kind of rad. so yea. here here to film.

angriness, bangers, cameras, and doodles.
today's ABC+D.
I miss the magazine and feeling dedicated. It's tiring to dig up positivity instead of just plain old appreciating the people you work with all day in natural way. I also miss the PBR, laughs and jokery. and just not feeling angry all the time.
bangers. great projects, photographs, pleasant things to look at.
got a new camera.... that brings the count up to.... 6. whoops.
client here are work is sponsoring a SBX girl from AK, so i'm putting all the doodles that i do in meetings to use by way of a poster for her to hand out at events. SBX... geeezzzzz....

Zing! is that what i think it was!?
"gallery without walls"
Diggin: DELAROCCA, STEVEN HARRINGTON, MADEMOISELLE BULLE, and MIKE PERRY.
This is a great project for any city. I guess it's kind of the same idea as the "wild salmon on parade" here in anchorage, or the lighthouses in portland, maine. but these are designers from all around the world, so it's gotta a little more "Zing!" to it.

I've been adopted.
Been doing some minor work for a band here in town that I originally found for a commercial. The first actual project was this poster, fun times, quick turn around, and now they want to "keep me."

Dedicated Project
Hey, Rad. I'd never heard of these dudes but I'm definitely appreciating the trailer and the powder slashes. Last year's movie is available for free download on their site, and this year's will be in November.
Powder slashes are one of the most rewarding feelings, it's like driving stick too fast, a complete excess but a wonderful feeling. Difference is, powder's free for the taking.

Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization
High Points:
"With nothing to defend, uphold or even embrace, the idea of “hipsterdom” is left wide open for attack. And yet, it is this ironic lack of authenticity that has allowed hipsterdom to grow into a global phenomenon that is set to consume the very core of Western counterculture. Most critics make a point of attacking the hipster’s lack of individuality, but it is this stubborn obfuscation that distinguishes them from their predecessors, while allowing hipsterdom to easily blend in and mutate other social movements, sub-cultures and lifestyles."
"While punk, disco and hip hop all had immersive, intimate and energetic dance styles that liberated the dancer from his/her mental states – be it the head-spinning b-boy or violent thrashings of a live punk show – the hipster has more of a joke dance. A faux shrug shuffle that mocks the very idea of dancing or, at its best, illustrates a non-committal fear of expression typified in a weird twitch/ironic twist. The dancers are too self-aware to let themselves feel any form of liberation; they shuffle along, shrugging themselves into oblivion."
"Red-eyed and bleary, they sit hunched over their laptops, wading through a sea of similarity to find their own (momentarily) thrilling instant of perfected hipster-ness.
What they may or may not know is that “cool-hunters” will also be skulking the same sites, taking note of how they dress and what they consume. These marketers and party-promoters get paid to co-opt youth culture and then re-sell it back at a profit. In the end, hipsters are sold what they think they invent and are spoon-fed their pre-packaged cultural livelihood."
Trends are a fascinating, puzzling, and frustrating phenomena. 5 years ago i thought chuck taylors where the footwear of the scum of society. i'm wearing them today.
ten years ago i scorned my glasses. Embarrassed, ashamed, i remember being holed up in the school bathroom - crouched on top of the counter, face an inch from the mirror - for an hour trying to put in my contacts for the first time. Today, i'm wearing my glasses. How does the way something look change, or more specifically, how does our experience change over time when we see something.

language block.
i love looking at photos on flickr, i love that it's so widely used around the world. only thing i dont love is that a lot of people post descriptions and comments in languages i dont understand. but because of that i've stumbled on what i'm going to call one of the most important pieces of literature of our freetranslation.com time.
I FOUND AUNT ESTHER CRYING, SICK TORTOISE.
POISONOUS ROOT, SEEMS, OR BAD CHEESE CONDITIONS.
DELICATE ANIMAL TORTOISES.
SOMEWHAT FOOLISH, they do NOT DISTINGUISH.
A PITY.
i've branded my feet. advertising language seems to have a common dictionary.

NARWHAL!
FYI: Narwhals actually exist. I didn't realize that, but there's some really persuasive footage on national geographic proving their existence.... who knew? Well I guess everyone, excluding me.
"The narwhal is the unicorn of the sea, a pale-colored porpoise found in Arctic coastal waters and rivers. These legendary animals have two teeth. In males, the more prominent tooth grows into a sword-like, spiral tusk up to 8.75 feet (2.7 meters) long. The ivory tusk tooth grows right through the narwhal's upper lip. Scientists are not certain of the tusk's purpose, but some believe it is prominent in mating rituals, perhaps used to impress females or to battle rival suitors." National Geographic

A little Jakob in my life.
I officially have a new favorite production company.
Actionhorse Films "Pony Tale"
Hampus Mosesson and Jakob Wilhelmson (my boyfriend, duh) are getting together with a bunch of Finns, Swedes, Icelandicians, Pat Moore and others. Their filmer wears a pony head costume. What's better? Oh and it's free for download in September.
